Combining Semi-Analytic Models of Galaxy Formation with Simulations of Galaxy Clusters: the Need for AGN Heating

چکیده
We present hydrodynamical N-body simulations of clusters of galaxies with feedback taken from semi-analytic models of galaxy formation. The advantage of this technique is that the source of feedback in our simulations is a population of galaxies that closely resembles that found in the real universe. We demonstrate that, to achieve the high entropy levels found in clusters, active galactic nuclei must inject a large fraction of their energy into the intergalactic/intracluster media throughout the growth period of the central black hole. These simulations reinforce the argument of Bower et al. [1], who arrived at the same conclusion on the basis of purely semi-analytic reasoning.

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
متن کاملNumerical Galaxy Catalog -i. a Semi-analytic Model of Galaxy Formation with N -body Simulations
We construct the Numerical Galaxy Catalog (νGC), based on a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation combined with high-resolution N -body simulations in a Λ-dominated flat cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model. The model includes several essential ingredients for galaxy formation, such as merging histories of dark halos directly taken from N -body simulations, radiative gas cooling, star f...
متن کاملObservable consequences of kinetic and thermal AGN feedback in elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters
We have constructed an analytical model of AGN feedback and studied its implications for elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters. The results show that momentum injection above a critical value will eject material from low mass elliptical galaxies, and leads to an X-ray luminosity, LX, that is ∝ σ , depending on the AGN fuelling mechanism, where σ is the velocity dispersion of the hot gas. This...
متن کاملAdding Environmental Gas Physics to the Semi-analytic Method for Galaxy Formation: Gravitational Heating
We present results of an attempt to include more detailed gas physics motivated from hydrodynamical simulations within semi-analytic models (SAM) of galaxy formation, focusing on the role that environmental effects play. The main difference to previous SAMs is that we include ’gravitational’ heating of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) by the net surplus of gravitational potential energy released ...
متن کاملSimulating the formation of disk galaxies: The impact of Jets from Active Galactic Nuclei
Recent semi-analytic models have highlighted the role of AGN jets in regulating the formation of galaxies. In this paper, we present a new implementation of feedback due to active galactic nuclei (AGN) in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation in which AGN feedback is assumed to heat the halo gas through the production of jets. Combining a theoretical model of mass accretion ...
